10-day Cochrane and area itinerary

Tucked between Calgary and the Canadian Rockies, Cochrane is more than a charming town with ranching roots — it’s the perfect basecamp for a week or more of unforgettable adventures. With activities and day trips in every direction, Cochrane is one of the best places to visit in Alberta.

From here, you can visit the iconic mountain towns of Banff and Canmore, explore the wild landscapes of Kananaskis, and wander through the hoodoos of Drumheller. Closer to home, you’ll find outdoor adventure in Bragg Creek, wildlife encounters near Ghost Lake, and small town gems in Historic Downtown Cochrane.

This fun-filled itinerary (with just the right balance of action and downtime) will keep you busy for 10 days in Cochrane and the nearby area. Let’s go!

Spend 10 days in and around Cochrane, one of the best places to visit in Alberta

Day 1: Cochrane

Ease into your trip with a visit to the Historic Cochrane Ranche Site. This 136-acre park has gentle wooded and paved hiking trails plus gorgeous mountain views. Also a historical site, it’s the perfect place to connect with the land and its stories.

Stroll the interpretive trail and visit the famous “Men of Vision” statue. Stop for a picnic, then head into the Cochrane Historical Museum and Stockmen’s Memorial Foundation. Both museums are volunteer-driven gems packed with fascinating tales to discover year-round.

A women looks at a museum display. The room has Western vibes, and there is a sign on the grey wood wall that says Blacksmith & Livery.

Days 2-3: Banff and Canmore

It’s time to get up close to some mountains! First, head 45 minutes west to Canmore to explore the quaint Main Street and go for a 4-km (2-mi) hike at Grassi Lakes. Then continue on for 20 minutes to the Town of Banff, located inside Banff National Park, where you can visit beautiful Bow Falls, the Fairmont Banff Springs (it looks just like a castle!), and more.

For a carefree experience and insider knowledge, we recommend visiting the area with a guide. Mountain Park Transportation offers driving tours of both Banff and Lake Louise packed with all of the sightseeing hotspots, and they’ll even pick you up at the Calgary airport. Or, if you’re looking for something more active, book a hiking or rock climbing tour with Alpine Air Adventures.

Winter alternative: go cross-country skiing at the Canmore Nordic Centre or book a ski touring or ice climbing excursion with Alpine Air Adventures.

Day 4: Kananaskis Country

For nature lovers, Kananaskis (or K-Country as known by the locals) is one of the best places to visit in Alberta.

Roughly an hour outside of Cochrane, visit Boundary Ranch for a horseback riding experience through mountain meadows and wooded trails. It’s a peaceful way to soak in the scenery and feel the connection to Alberta’s cowboy heritage. Need more of an adrenaline rush? They also offer whitewater rafting adventures!

If you’d rather head out on your own, try a hike at Troll Falls (easy) or Prairie View Trail (moderate). Be sure to take proper safety precautions.

Winter alternative: Feel like you’re in a Hallmark movie on a sleigh ride at Boundary Ranch, or hike to Troll Falls to see the frozen lower falls.

An octagonal building with a turret in the top sits among some trees with a field of green grass in front, and Rocky Mountains behind.

Day 5: Calgary

While based in Cochrane, you’re just 30 minutes west of downtown Calgary, Alberta’s largest city. So, it’s easy to blend some big city energy into your itinerary.

There are tons of things to do in Calgary year-round. We recommend starting with:

  • Calgary Tower: Experience panoramic views and glass-floor thrills, with the option to dine at the Sky 360 revolving restaurant.
  • Studio Bell: Explore interactive exhibits and Canadian music history at the home of the National Music Centre.
  • TELUS Spark Science Centre: Check out fun, educational exhibits for all ages. Or, get tickets for an 18+ cocktail night!
  • Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo: Visit this conservation centre and zoo, the home of more than 4,000 animals across 100+ species.

Day 6: Drumheller

It’s time to switch things up. Drive 1 hour and 45 minutes east to Drumheller, a quirky town that’s also the home of hoodoos, dinosaur bones, and Alberta’s badlands.

Spend the day at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, a world-renowned destination for anyone curious about prehistoric life. Wander through towering dino skeletons and interactive exhibits that make science feel like an adventure at any time of year.

Before you head back to Cochrane, visit the Willow Creek Hoodoos and the Atlas Coal Mine (the last wooden coal processing plant in Canada), where you can explore on your own or take a guided tour.

Day 7: North Cowboy Trail

Today, you’ll stick closer to Cochrane as you venture north along the Cowboy Trail, known for its rolling hills and Prairie hospitality. This mostly-year-round route is ideal for road trippers who love the countryside.

Make a full day of it by stopping at these locally-owned spots:

  • Bottrel General Store, Cafe and Campground: Visit Alberta’s oldest general store, have a meal at the cozy cafe, and listen to live music on Sundays. Or, make it a getaway with a night at the onsite campground in summer.

Day 9: Bragg Creek

Just 30 minutes southwest of Cochrane, Bragg Creek is home to some of the best mountain biking trails in Alberta. Head to West Bragg Creek, a popular area with options for every skill level. If you don’t have your own gear, you can rent a bike locally and hit the trails in no time.

Prefer to explore on foot? Try Fullerton Loop for a 6.8-km (4.1-mi) hike with rewarding views, then stop at nearby Elbow Falls for photos. On your way back to Cochrane, visit Bragg Creek’s village centre for a coffee, a pint, or a locally made treat, plus local shops with rustic charm.

Day 10: Cochrane

After exploring so much of the region, spend your final day soaking up everything Cochrane has to offer. Spoiler: there’s a lot here!

Start downtown with boutique shopping, a relaxed lunch at Fence and Post or Rocky View Brewing Taproom (they’ve got a dog-friendly patio!), and a scoop from the famous MacKay’s Ice Cream for dessert.

Next, tee off at the Cochrane Golf Club or The Links of GlenEagles, or take to the skies with L R Helicopters for a scenic tour over the foothills and Rockies.

If you love carnival rides, Calaway Park is an easy 15-minute drive east and packed with fun and games. Or, feeling creative? Try a drop-in class at Saffron Pottery Studio or Route 22 Artist Collective Gallery, where you can also shop for local art.
