4 Alberta non-profits in Cochrane to support this season

The holidays are a great time to give back to Alberta non-profits that directly benefit the local Cochrane community. If you’re getting into the giving spirit as the holidays approach, consider donating to the organizations working to preserve the history of Cochrane, Alberta and making life a little easier for those in need. Here are four Cochrane-based non-profit organizations that could use your support. 

1. Home Treasures, Cochrane, Alberta

Cochrane Home Treasures is a beloved secondhand home goods shop and one of the many Alberta non-profits providing support to a network of charities in the local area. You can donate gently used kitchen items, furniture, linens, and electronics or make a monetary donation that will go toward community members in need—just in time for the holidays.

2. Home Reno Heaven and ​​the Cochrane Society for Housing Options

Make a difference for those struggling to find housing by donating to Home Reno Heaven. The organization raises money for the Cochrane Society for Housing Options (CSHO) which supports affordable housing initiatives around town. It’s also a one-stop shop for all your home renovation needs, from used power tools, to hardware, wood, light fixtures, and much more. 

You can shop or drop off functional home renovation supplies at 136 Charlesworth Avenue. Donations can be made in-store or on the CSHO website. And, you can also sign up to have your refundable recycling picked up and your refunds donated to CSHO via SkiptheDepot. 

3. Cochrane Historical and Archival Preservation Society

The Cochrane Historical and Archival Preservation Society (CHAPS) runs the Cochrane Historical Museum. The organization is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and providing education about the history of Cochrane, Alberta. They have also published two volumes of local history and lore, Big Hill Country and More Big Hill Country: 1945-1980, and sponsor restoration projects around Cochrane. You can purchase the latest publication through their online store.

Although the Museum is only open in the summer, you can check out the exhibitions on line through their virtual tour. This volunteer fun organization is supported through donation or by becoming a member when you visit the museum or on the CHAPS website.

4. Stockmen’s Memorial Foundation

Stockmen’s Memorial Foundation (SMF) works to preserve the history of the ranching and livestock industry and supports agricultural education through its extensive library. SMF is one of the only Alberta non-profits that focuses on Western Canada’s farming culture. Donating to the organization helps ensure that the legacy of the livestock industry is passed down to new generations. 

Donations can be made in-person at the library at 101 RancheHouse Road or on the SMF website. SMF also runs a small boutique that supports the organization and offers a unique option for shopping in Cochrane, Alberta (and online) where you’ll find prints from local fine artists, books by Cochrane-based authors, and Western-inspired gifts.
