A Guide to Historic Downtown Cochrane, Alberta

Have you ever wondered if you’re missing something when you wander through a new small town? In Historic Downtown Cochrane, the answer is almost certainly yes. The route runs along 1st Street from 5th Avenue to Centre Avenue, roughly a kilometre on foot, with a few side-street detours worth taking.

Where to Eat

Every restaurant on Main Street is independently owned. From a classic diner breakfast at the western end of the strip to authentic Greek home cooking and refined Alberta-ingredient cuisine closer to the east, the food scene here is consistently worth your time.

Coffee, Tea & Craft Beer

Whether you need a slow morning coffee or somewhere to land after a few hours on your feet, Main Street has you covered. From specialty roasters to a log-cabin local favourite, a quiet tea shop tucked off the main drag, and a craft brewery with a patio, there’s a stop for every mood.

The Stops You can't Miss

MacKay’s Ice Cream has been made locally on Main Street since 1948 and is, simply, non-negotiable. The Old Piano on the Rockyview Hotel porch is open to anyone who wants to play. And StarLight Portal offers an experience you won’t find anywhere else on the route.

Cochrane’s Main Street is home to a range of small, independent boutiques. Whether you’re looking for homemade fudge, sustainable clothing, unique gifts, or something for the home, the shops here are owner-run and genuinely good to browse.

Cochrane’s creative community has a strong presence in the downtown core. You’ll find a working pottery studio, a gallery staffed entirely by the artists themselves, a custom jewellery studio, an independent bookshop with a vinyl record collection downstairs, and a creative hub at the eastern end of the route.

Public Art

Historic Downtown Cochrane has eight significant works of public art woven into a single walkable kilometre. Each one was commissioned with care and reflects a real chapter of the community’s history, from Cowboy Trail ranching culture and pioneer women to Stoney Nakoda heritage and pandemic-era resilience.
