You don’t need a boat to be about trout around here—gather your gear and take a deep breath of that fresh Cochrane air as you try out the best fishing in Alberta this summer.

Here are 3 spots to make a splash and share your favourite tales of fishing in Alberta

1. Winchell Lake

Challenge your angling skills with a day on the water at Winchell Lake. Located just 30 km northwest of Cochrane, the picturesque 40 acres is home to plenty of wildlife, so don’t forget your camera as well as your rod. The lake is a popular choice for anglers of all ages, so it’s best to get there early to snag your optimal spot and bask in the serenity of having the lake to yourself. The shoreline is marshy, so bring your rubber boots and watch where you step! There are wooden pallets placed along the shoreline to assist in finding a good place to set up for the day.

Choosing a rod is one of the most important tasks for anglers. If you’re trying to catch a bigger fish, a shorter rod can give you more control, but won’t allow you to cast as far. A 7-foot fishing pole is a good option for most beginners.

Remember that all sportfishing in Alberta requires an Alberta Sportfishing license, unless you’re under 16 years old or over 65.

2. Bow River

You’ll find the Bow River winding its way through the town of Cochrane, creating ample opportunities for your next big catch. The paths of Riverfront Park lead you along the banks of the Bow River, providing a serene environment to fly fish in peace.

The mouth of Big Hill Creek is teeming with brown and rainbow trout as well as rocky mountain whitefish. Park at Riverfront Park and make the short walk to the water. Try to be on the water between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the insects are hatching. With the right rod and skills, you can mimic the flies hatching to catch a fish.

A fly rod is used to deliver a fly in front of a fish’s mouth, without scaring the fish. It takes practice to place the fly delicately, but there are also different rods for different types of fish, and for experience levels. You can purchase full kits that set you up with a rod, reel, case, line, leader, tippet, and everything else you need. Or, you may prefer to buy your equipment separately for a seasoned angler’s more tailored experience of the best fishing in Alberta.

3. Mitford Pond

Mitford Pond is the perfect place to practice fishing in Alberta with your aspiring young anglers—the pond is stocked with trout for catch-and-release. Located in Mitford Park, the pond is full of brown and rainbow trout to hone your technique while enjoying some family time.

Anglers under the age of 13 are allowed to use bait and keep one trout per day. Anyone over the age of 14 must release each catch, and are prohibited from using bait. Don’t forget a license is required by any person 16 or over. Single barbless hooks on lures or flies are permitted, but there is no night fishing allowed.
