1. Winchell Lake

Challenge your angling skills with a day on the water at Winchell Lake. Located just 30 km northwest of Cochrane, the picturesque 40 acres is home to plenty of wildlife, so don’t forget your camera as well as your rod. The lake is a popular choice for anglers of all ages, so it’s best to get there early to snag your optimal spot and bask in the serenity of having the lake to yourself. The shoreline is marshy, so bring your rubber boots and watch where you step! There are wooden pallets placed along the shoreline to assist in finding a good place to set up for the day.

Choosing a rod is one of the most important tasks for anglers. If you’re trying to catch a bigger fish, a shorter rod can give you more control, but won’t allow you to cast as far. A 7-foot fishing pole is a good option for most beginners.

Remember that all sportfishing in Alberta requires an Alberta Sportfishing license, unless you’re under 16 years old or over 65.

2. Bow River

Anglers under the age of 13 are allowed to use bait and keep one trout per day. Anyone over the age of 14 must release each catch, and are prohibited from using bait. Don’t forget a license is required by any person 16 or over. Single barbless hooks on lures or flies are permitted, but there is no night fishing allowed.
