Give back and celebrate in Cochrane this Christmas season

There’s something magical about Cochrane in December. Twinkling lights line the streets, families stroll through Historic Downtown with steaming cups of hot chocolate, and everything feels merry. The best part? These good vibes are available to everyone — even if you’re only in town for a weekend.

If you’re looking for ways to make this Christmas season meaningful while experiencing some small town charm, Cochrane offers countless opportunities to give back and participate in holiday traditions. Let’s explore a few ways you can help spread Christmas cheer this year.

Support holiday giving traditions

Every year, the Cochrane Activettes’ Share Your Christmas program gets Cochrane buzzing with generosity. You can participate by donating non-perishable food or gift items at one of the many dropoff locations around town, anytime until December 8th. Every donation, big or small, ensures that more families can experience the joy of the season. And the impact is significant: over 400 households will receive gift hampers as part of the program.

Or, take part in another fun tradition: Stuff a Bus. Two buses filled with new toys will be delivered directly to the Activettes’ sorting facility for the Share Your Christmas program. You can join in by bringing donations to the Canadian Tire parking lot between 10 am and 3 pm on December 6th. If you donate a toy, money, or food, you’ll even get a free photo with Santa!

For the little ones in our community, the Kiwanis Club of Cochrane has long been keeping Christmas magical. Through their Christmas Toy Project, you can donate to support the children who need it most. Funds raised will enable around 200 kids to choose their own gifts up to $50 each, including goodie bags, treats, and even tickets to a Cochrane Generals hockey game.

Get involved with local nonprofits

Cochrane’s charm isn’t just in its Hallmark movie-esque atmosphere during the holidays. It’s also in the people and organizations that make this town so vibrant.

One great way to experience that spirit is by visiting Home Reno Heaven. This store does more than supply tools and home renovation materials. Every donation supports the Cochrane Society for Housing Options, helping to create affordable housing solutions for families in town. Here, those tools you’re no longer using can be turned into real, tangible help — a small gesture that makes a big difference.

If you’re drawn to history, you can help preserve it by donating to the Cochrane Historical and Archival Preservation Society (CHAPS), operator of the Cochrane Historical Museum, or Stockmen’s Memorial Foundation, which celebrates the ranching and livestock heritage that defines this region.

Help care for animals, big and small

Giving back isn’t just for people. You can support animals this season by participating in the Cochrane & Area Humane Society’s Triple The Love Tuesday on December 2nd. Every dollar donated will be matched twice, up to $35,000 — turning your $50 into $150 worth of lifesaving care. These donations provide food, shelter, medical attention, and rehabilitation for animals in need.

And for a festive family outing, the Humane Society’s Christmas Open House on December 6th offers everything from a bake sale to pet photoshoots and a chance to meet adoptable dogs and cats. While you’re there, you can leave a gift under the tree. It’s a heartwarming way to celebrate the season while helping those who can’t ask for help themselves.

And giving back doesn’t stop there. You can support animals in Cochrane and beyond by donating to Global Pet Foods, a family-owned, award-winning pet store here in town that partners with animal charities across Canada. Or, help care for wolfdogs and end the cycle of abandonment by supporting Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, either as a donor or by supplying much-needed goods.

The joy of shopping local

Of course, the holiday season is also about wandering quaint streets filled with lights and music. On December 4th, Cochrane’s Historic Downtown will come alive for Late-Night Christmas Shopping, when over 20 shops will stay open until 9 p.m.

Skip the mall and stroll through our twinkling downtown, warm up with hot chocolate, and get all of your Christmas gifts checked off your shopping list. Keep an eye out for mischievous elves downtown, who will be handing out special coupons, plus a visit from Santa. And feel good knowing that every purchase will stay local, keeping the heart of Cochrane strong.

A season that feels like home

The magic of Cochrane at Christmastime isn’t just in the lights or the gifts. It’s in the way the community comes together. Volunteering, donating, or supporting a local business helps those in need and makes you part of a story bigger than yourself.
