There’s a grassroots art scene hiding in the foothills west of Calgary, and most of it is handmade. In Cochrane & Area, the same golden light that hits the ranchland gets captured on canvas, cast in bronze, and thrown on a pottery wheel. This three-day trip moves from downtown galleries to a backcountry meadery to a workshop bench where you do the making yourself.

Galleries & Studios to Browse Anytime

Downtown Cochrane has more working artists than its size lets on. The Common Works is Cochrane’s newest makerspace, art gallery, and community arts centre, all under one roof. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee from La Casita Coffee and browse the gallery, or sign up for a workshop. Route 22 Artist Collective Gallery is a place built by artists — browse the art, pick up a unique gift, or take home a piece for your own walls. We always recommend saving time for Studio West Bronze Foundry, too: Shirley and Don have been casting bronze here for decades, and pieces from their workshop now stand in galleries and public squares around the world.

Spend your first evening enjoying food, music and literary culture.

Downtown Cochrane keeps going after the shops close. Book a table at Fence & Post for dinner; the kitchen leans on local Alberta ingredients, and the cake of the day is worth saving room for. Then head to Found Books & Cafe, an intimate stage tucked inside a bookstore that books real musical and literary talent most months; grab your tickets early, this one sells out. Or keep the night simple at Rocky View Brewing Taproom, with live music, the occasional trivia night, and a patio that’s good for one more round.

Head North Up the Cowboy Trail

Day two trades Main Street for open road. Book a medicine walk with Mahikan Trails right in Cochrane and learn which native plants this land has been offering up for generations. Stop at the century-old Bottrel General Store on the way; it’s full of artisan goods, gifts, and unique finds, and grab a drink at Rosa’s cafe. Fallentimber Meadery is next: a family-owned operation crafting a mead you won’t find anywhere else, with a wood-fired pizza oven and hammocks strung in the birch trees on weekends.

Where to Rest Your Head

Book one of two very different bases for this trip. The newly renovated Canalta Hotel sits right in the centre of Cochrane, with a waterslide to keep the kids, or you, busy after a day of gallery-hopping. Further north, The Crossing at Ghost River trades convenience for quiet. Pack a journal, a sketchpad, or just a camera, and find your own bend of the river.

Get Your Hands Dirty

The last day flips you from spectator to maker. Book a session with Alberta Land Based Education to learn the Indigenous craft of hide tanning, or sign up for a soapstone carving class at Unique Soapstone Experiences. At Coco Creations, local painter Nicole Bahniuk leads alcohol ink workshops with no experience required. Or book the Branding Experience at Stockmen’s Museum & Mercantile: design your own cattle brand, then burn it into a piece of barnwood to take home. A few of the downtown stops from day one are worth a second look here, too. Route 22, Saffron Pottery Studio, and The Common Works all run their own rotating workshops, so check each one’s calendar before you go.
