Passion for Paddling

When it seems like life is moving too fast and quality family time is fading, I start searching for an escape hatch, even if just for a couple of days.

You can only imagine my delight when I discovered Hunter Valley Adventures. Owners Kelly and Shea Beaton have a piece of heaven on seven acres in the rolling foothills of the Canadian Rockies on the upper Red Deer River. And it’s just over an hour’s drive from Cochrane.

Rafting, Fishing, Hiking and more…

Get ready for some of the best whitewater rafting in Alberta. And hiking. And fishing. And horseback riding. Off the grid. Back to nature. No cellphone coverage (no worries, there’s a land line if needed). No email. No modern life intrusions. The perfect opportunity to reacquaint the family with Mother Nature.

Come up for a half or full day’s adventuring or do as we did and stay overnight. Rustic cabins suit couples or families. There’s even a refitted yellow school bus that sleeps nine!

Get off the grid with the family

If you do the weekend thing like we did, you’ll need to plan ahead and bring in your own bedding and food. There’s a wonderful communal building known as the Cookhouse, where guests can cook meals, dine at picnic-style tables and sprawl on comfy couches and chairs around a real wood fire where the smoke drifts up through a hole in the ceiling. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of navigating Class 2 to Class 4 rapids on traditional rafts, inflatable canoes or tandem kayaks. Life is short. Just do it.

Great gift idea for a summer adventure for the whole family!!
