The Crossing at Ghost River

WHEN YOU CAN’T ADVANCE, RETREAT IS OFTEN THE BEST OPTION

Every now and then, one comes across a place of such natural beauty it quite takes your breath away.

Less than 25 minutes west of Cochrane is such a place. Meandering along the banks of the Ghost River, the 145 acres that make up The Crossing offer respite from the stresses of life these days. Whether for a wellness retreat, family reunion, corporate leadership workshop or an intimate wedding (they even offer an elopement package – who can do big weddings these days?), or just a weekend getaway to rest and recharge the batteries, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more inviting and tranquil location.

What’s in a name?

Many people have asked where The Crossing got its name. Some say it’s because the low point in the river was used by first peoples indigenous to the region to cross for hunting and to further their exploration of the territory. Later it would connect and aid the early explorers, traders, and settlers in much the same way. Others say it was a place of spiritual crossing for the indigenous people, as they sent their dearly departed into the river to disappear into the deep. Or maybe because it was the site of a fierce battle and spirits of the dead still wander the riverlands (hmm…Ghost River?).

In more recent times, ownership can be traced to the Canadian Pacific Railway. After changing hands several times, The Crossing At Ghost River became a conference and learning center in the late 1970s before morphing into the retreat center it has become today. Accommodation and meeting spaces are spread over several buildings – one that will remind you of grandma’s house, another a refurbished barn complete with wood burning stove, soaring ceilings, large windows, and a spacious deck. All the (beautifully appointed!) bedrooms have their own ensuites, but no TVs or phones to encourage guests to unplug when day is done.

Safe haven

What is particularly reassuring about The Crossing at this moment in time is they are able to offer exclusive use of the property to group bookings for a safe and private experience, providing a “closed” environment for the participants. Everyone in the same social bubble, connecting with each other and the beauty of the land. Breathe easy.
