The Heart of Historic Downtown Cochrane

Rockyview Hotel

If you’ve ever wanted to experience western heritage and cowboy culture with a modern twist, the Rockyview Hotel is the place to do it. There’s no mistaking this striking building that looks like it could double as a Hollywood movie set when you stroll through Historic Downtown Cochrane.

Built in 1904, the hotel is a place where the past meets modern day. It’s a destination of its own, where you can stay in newly-renovated heritage rooms, indulge in hearty dining at the Texas Gate Bar & Grill, enjoy the lively patio in the warmer months, and let loose with nightly entertainment ranging from line dancing and karaoke to DJs and free pool.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your stay at the Rockyview Hotel.

Stay in the heart of the action

Whether you’re in Cochrane for a weekend getaway or just a night, a stay at the Rockyview Hotel puts you right in the heart of Historic Downtown. Step outside the hotel’s front doors and you’ll find cafés, boutiques, and galleries all within walking distance.

Each of the hotel’s 15 newly-renovated rooms blend old-world character with modern comforts. Design buffs, take note of the ceilings made from original pressed tin and the criss-crossed wooden beams that nod to the building’s rich history.

Fun fact: the Rockyview Hotel is one of Cochrane’s few remaining original buildings and just about the oldest operational hotel in Western Canada.

Enjoy down-home hospitality at the Texas Gate Bar & Grill

You won’t need to venture far for a good meal! The Texas Gate Bar & Grill located inside the Rockyview Hotel is known for its hearty portions and friendly service. The restaurant serves up Alberta favourites and comfort classics, from juicy steaks and ribs to jumbo chicken wings, nachos, salads, and all-day breakfast.

In the summer months, the outdoor patio is one of Cochrane’s best spots to sit back with a cold drink and watch the activity on Main Street. It’s the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring the shops, trails, or nearby attractions.

Choose from a full week of adventure

The Rockyview Hotel has a lively bar and entertainment scene where you can join in the fun multiple nights a week. Come on down to fling a few arrows or shoot some pool—three tables and four dart boards await. Or, for even more action, here’s what’s typically on the schedule.

  • Tuesday nights: line dancing
Learn a few new steps with a group of friendly locals! These free line dancing lessons are a chance to get moving, laugh with friends, and experience cowboy culture firsthand. Seasoned dancers and newbies are welcome.

  • Thursday nights: karaoke
Grab the mic, pick your favourite song, and let your inner performer shine. Karaoke nights at the Rockyview Hotel are relaxed and welcoming, making them a great way to kick off the weekend early.

  • Friday and Saturday nights: all-request DJ
When the weekend rolls around, the bar transforms into one of the liveliest spots in town. The DJ keeps the dance floor moving with an all-request set list, meaning you help shape the soundtrack of the night.

  • Sunday: free pool all day
Sundays are for relaxing, and at the Rockyview Hotel, that means free pool all day. It’s a laid-back way to spend an afternoon with friends over a few games and a casual meal.

Connect with Alberta’s history

What really sets the Rockyview Hotel apart is its rich history. Over the years, the hotel has met many needs, including converting one floor into the area’s only hospital for one week a month, housing a livery stable (now the dance floor in the Texas Gate), and showcasing travelling salesmen’s wares out of their rented rooms.

The hotel even became a proper teahouse during the prohibition years. Back in the 1950s, it also had the distinction of being the first Alberta bar where men and women could co-mingle.

The Rockyview Hotel delivers an experience that’s both authentically western and refreshingly modern. Make it part of your next visit to Cochrane and see why this landmark has been at the heart of downtown for generations. Plus, explore more things to do in Cochrane to plan your full itinerary!
