    Public art: The Legacy Statue
    Public art: The Legacy Statue

The Legacy Statue, situated in Centennial Plaza, is a tribute to the spirit of the pioneer women who settled the Cochrane area. Created by renowned local artists Don Begg and Shirley Stephens-Begg of Studio West Bronze Foundry, this sculpture is the second of only three copies in existence, with the others located in Calgary’s Fish Creek Park and Saskatoon. While the figure was inspired by the artists’ own great-grandmother to ensure the piece felt relatable, the Cochrane edition features a unique bronze cream can to reflect the history of the local creamery.

A fascinating connection exists between the monument and the Ford Motor Company, which shares the same anniversary as the town of Cochrane. At the statue’s unveiling, Ford provided a fleet of vintage Model T cars to personally transport the living pioneer womenβ€”whose names are honoured on the monumentβ€”to the ceremony. Today, the statue stands as a central gathering point in the historic downtown, with a plaque bearing 40 names that represent the enduring legacy of the resilient women who helped build the community.

Public Art: Wagichi ha githni ichiyach
Public Art: Wagichi ha githni ichiyach

Located at the Cochrane Crossing Civic Plaza, this bronze sculpture is titled Wagichi ha githni ichiyach, which translates from the Nakoda language to “She Dances for Healing”. Created by artists Malann Klassen and Lara Kruger and cast by the local Studio West Bronze Foundry, the piece was modeled by Daisynae Labelle, an ÎyΓ’rhe Nakoda woman, to represent the strength and resilience of her people.

The sculpture depicts a Jingle Dancer, a role traditionally associated with healing and medicine. On windy days, the statue comes to life as the individual bronze cones on the dress create a soft jingling sound, mimicking the movement of a real dancer. As a significant milestone in Cochrane’s cultural landscape, this installation honours the town’s neighbours in Mini Thni (Morley) and marks a shift in the local arts scene as one of the first major public pieces in town created by women and featuring an Indigenous woman as the subject.

    Public Art: The Cochrane Bricolage
    Public Art: The Cochrane Bricolage

The Cochrane Bricolage, located at the Cochrane Crossing Civic Plaza, is a stunning six-sided mosaic that serves as a vibrant visual narrative of the community. Created by internationally acclaimed artist Karen Ho Fatt, this masterpiece is composed of more than 23,000 exquisitely assembled tiles, many of which were painstakingly hand-cut into 1″ x 1″ squares.

Each facet of the sculpture represents the mountains that define the local horizon and is designed to honour the different chapters of Cochrane’s story. As you explore the piece, you will find intricate nods to the town’s ranching heritage, its high-tech future with innovators like Garmin, and even the artist’s personal introduction to townβ€”featuring references to Muller Windsports and McKay’s Ice Cream.

Visitors are encouraged to spend time discovering the hidden details within the tiles. The work utilizes a technique called optical mixing, where different values and hues are placed side-by-side to create depth and interest, along with pearlescent tiles that add a luminous quality as you move around the sculpture. It is a piece built for slow exploration, where you can truly get lost in the thousands of stories it tells.

    Public Art: The Hereafter
    Public Art: The Hereafter

The third sculpture at the Cochrane Crossing Civic Plaza, The Hereafter is a contemporary installation created by artists Lara Kruger and Malann Klassen. The sculpture was inspired by the architectural geometry of the CP Rail bridge that spans the Bow River, serving as a symbol of the physical and metaphorical connections within the community.

The sculpture consists of three towering columns representing the past, present, and future. Each column is meticulously constructed from stainless steel, layered glass, and aluminum, with the glass sections designed to capture the shifting light of the Alberta sky. This design reflects the convergence of different cultures and histories at this central community hub.

This sculpture was installed shortly after the grandfather tree in the Cochrane Ranche fell in a windstorm, and the wooden piece coming from the nest is a piece of that tree.

While the sculpture is a striking landmark during the day, it is highly recommended to return after sunset. At night, the towers are internally illuminated, transforming into glowing beacons that honour the enduring spirit of the town and offer a completely different visual experience as the light interacts with the glass and steel.

It features a plaque with a QR code linking to the stories behind the individual contributions. The project was spearheaded by the Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES).
